Tommy Mel’s… ¡real American gluten free burgers!

If you want to travel back in time and feel like Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson at the cafe of Grease, stop searching and go to eat a good gluten-free burger at Tommy Mel’s…

You won’t have any problem to find this restaurant as the pink and blue neon lights that announce delicious hamburgers and milkshakes on top of the large windows will prevent you from missing it. From the outside, you’ll see the typical American restaurant with all the elements matching: white and light blue sofa seats, white tables with the chrome border, and white walls with funny phrases. And… of course! On the table you will find the ketchup, the mustard and the barbecue sauce and, in some, the typical American jukebox to play your favorite song.

When you get in, the floor already tells you that you have reached your destination! In addition, while you wait, you start feeling that the rhythm sneaks into your body, first your feet begin to follow the rhythm, and then you almost start dancing the rockabilly music that will accompany you during the rest of the dinner. Luckily, before you pick up the microphone next to the entrance to start singing Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation” song, one of the waiters comes to give you a table. The uniforms are sensational! Also matching with the decoration, of course! The girls wear something similar to a dress jacket that can be pink with black buttons or black with pink stitching. And the boys, wear a blue shirt with white collar and seams. Great!

Oh! Wow! Sorry! As we go there almost every second week, they already know us and I went straight to the table haha! When you get into the restaurant, inform the waiter that you are celiac and he will pick up a gluten free menu for you. Something that will also surprise you is the amount of gluten free dishes that are available. We usually take the CHICKEN FINGERS as a starter and then either a “JUICY BURGER” – which comes with a fried egg – or the “BOOGIE BURGER”. If not, we take a “CLUB SPECIAL” sandwich or the “MASTER BBQ CHICKEN”. If you take the “MASTER BBQ CHICKEN” I recommend you to order another starter, because this sandwich comes with chicken fingers inside. In addition, all these dishes come with a side of French fries wrapped in a paper cone. They are really delicious!

The truth is that I have never been able to have a dessert because I never have space left in my stomach, but they have CHEESECAKES, CHOCOLATE CAKES, BROWNIES and APPLE CARAMELS – the typical American apple pie – that look really great … awesome! And if not, a MILKSHAKE OF NUTELLA! So good, OMG!!

It is possible that, in any of my trips, I go to some restaurant not trained by the associations where the risk of being contaminated with gluten exists. I kindly ask you to also take into account that the list of references can change. Please, always double check before eating in the restaurants we recommend. Thank you very much!
