NoGlu: one of the few gluten-free restaurants in Paris that is 100% gluten-free

This was the second last day in Paris and I couldn’t leave the city witout trying another restaurant. The traffic was horrible and to get back to the hotel took us an average of 2 hours. This made the fact of being able to enjoy the city a bit more difficult. We used to arrive totally exhausted. For this reason, we always end up having dinner in the restaurant that we explained in the previous post.
Although it was an exhausting trip, concerning to the food, that trip was totally opposite to 2016. After eating all days out, I felt really good. In addition, until then, I had had a great time at La Rotonde de la Muette restaurant. As the gluten free options were limited. I wanted to change to another restaurant!
Also, of all the meals I made on this trip, dinner was always the best. I couldn’t eat gluten free breakfast in the hotel. And, at the fair, there was nothing gluten free either. Normally, I used to eat breakfast from the “just in case shopping”. And to eat, I ate a sandwich with the cold cuts I had bought at the supermarket that I had found the first day. Luckily, the improvised fridge that I had created in the room, keep the cold cuts in good condition.

As you can see, unlike other trips I’ve made for work to much more far away countries, France was still the country where I had the most difficulty eating.

We arrived back to the hotel, around 7pm, we did not accept a “no” for an answer. While we were returning, we asked Daniel – our French companion – to make a reservation for two at the NoGlu restaurant, on the 16th of the Passage des Panoramas.

We stopped for a while at the hotel to put on more comfortable clothes and, before the tiredness took over us, we went back to the car to go to the restaurant. On the way, we saw the Eiffel Tower again. This time we saw it from the other side of the river, at the top. Then, we headed towards the Champs Elysees. Those days had begun the riots of the “yellow vests”. Although it was night and the demonstration that day was over, there were still remnants of the bonfires and wreckage that had caused in the area.
When there were less than 600 meters to reach the restaurant, we started looking for parking. This looked like a fairly old Paris area. The road was paved, instead of asphalted, and there were very few areas where you could park. Luckily, we found an underground parking in the Place de la Bourse. This car park was great, since it was less than 5 minutes from the restaurant, walking.
The restaurant NoGlu is in a pedestrian passage, parallel to the rue Vivienne. It took us a while to find the entrance to the passage. Finally, we entered from Boulevard Montmartre.
During the day, that passage must be wonderful. There were several antique shops, art galleries and art shops and other furniture and decorative items. All this quite aligned with the passage. A little overloaded for my taste. Upon entering the restaurant, I was a little surprised at how small it was. It consists of two levels: on the ground floor, you will find the kitchen and a bar. The bar is right in front of the kitchen. In fact, from there you see how they prepare everything. It reminded me a little of the Flax Kale in Barcelona.
In line with the passage in which it is located, the restaurant was a bit dark, with a very minimalist decoration and furniture very different from each other. When we got to the top, I had the feeling that there were not two identical chairs.
Once seated, the waitress brought us the gluten free menu. I made sure that everything was gluten free. The gluten-free menu consisted of three sections: Starters, with 5 options; Main dishes, with 6 options; and Desserts, with 2 or 3 options. All the reviews I had read spoke very well about their gluten free burger. As there was only one beef burger – the other was vegetarian – it was very easy to decide. Rio, my representative from South Africa, ordered the same.
Finally, they brought the hamburger. I guess it would be the dim light of the restaurant. At first glance, I found it less appetizing than I had imagined it in the description. It was a fairly simple hamburger: beef burger with tomato, lettuce, cheddar cheese and chips. Due to the excellent reviews I had read, my expectations were very high. At first glance, it didn’t fulfill them, but when I took the first bite, I understood better why they talked so good about those gluten-free burgers. The meat was really rich and it goes without saying that the fries were homemade. The bread crumbled a bit, but the taste of the meat mixed with the texture of the melted cheese and the contrast of temperature with the lettuce and tomato made up for it.

Although the prices were more similar to the ones we paid in Switzerland (€ 46 for two hamburgers and two waters), it was worth having a try at the restaurant. We hope that the next time we go to Paris, it will be on vacation. This way we can enjoy the city better and have time to try other restaurants.
