Pireas: we eat at a restaurant with views of the bay that are hard to beat!

It was the last day in Athens already! Although it was a work trip and, as I told you in the previous post, I had had little time to visit the city but I had been able to eat in some pretty interesting gluten-free restaurants. That day we were in Pireas and had a couple of hours to wait until the next meeting. It was a beautiful day. It was a great opportunity to discover gluten-free restaurants in Pireas, totally improvised! You can watch the video of the trip here here or by clicking on the image:

That day was like any other day. I had breakfast in the room, Kostas came to pick me up to go visit clients and we immersed ourselves in the chaotic traffic of Athens while talking about how to approach the next meeting. In between we also talked about personal issues, dreams and things we would like to do during the next vacation.

When your visitors are in such far-flung locations, you usually have to schedule meetings with some time in between to make sure you won’t be late for the next one. Also, you never know how long a meeting will last… there are times when you estimate an hour’s duration and it drags on, and others, like that first one, that last very little. This left us with more than two hours until the next meeting. We were in Pireas, and Kostas took me to a restaurant-bar with an impressive terrace. The intention was to have a drink there while we took the opportunity to work until it was time to go to the next meeting.

The Istioplokos Omilos Pirea restaurant at Karagiorgi Servias 18 in Pireas was an impressive place where the last thing I wanted to do was work. At night and in the summer, there must be a lively atmosphere there. From our table we had a breathtaking view of the bay – what a blast! You can see it on video here.

In fact we had to change tables because we were in full sun and I didn’t wear sunscreen haha… I didn’t want to end up with bandages again as I did on the trip to Tunisia due to sunburn…

We made pretty good use of the time there. Although we were initially going to have just a coffee, in the end Kostas suggested me to eat there too.

The adventure began! In these beach places there are usually not many gluten-free options… and the ones there are maybe they are too risky… I don’t know! Maybe sometimes I’m a little suspicious… or not!

The waitress brought us the menu. I looked at it and did not identify any indication of allergens. I looked at Kostas and asked if I could speak to the waitress.

Again, Kostas took the gluten-free travel card in Greek and went to talk to the girl. In these cases, to make things as easy as possible, I usually order a plain omelet with salad. It’s something easy to prepare and requires few utensils. That way I reduce the risk of cross contamination . There’s always a clean pan in a restaurant kitchen! Or so I like to think hehe.

They brought me a huge omelet! But hey, I’m not complaining because we were eating that day. As I told you in the last articles, when I travel to Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia or Croatia for work we don’t have time to eat. We only visit clients during the day!

That day I would not dine at the hotel. And neither at one of the gluten-free restaurants in Athens that had been recommended to me by my Greek celiac friends. That day I would have dinner at Kostas’ house. We would have a barbecue with his wife and son.

Before going to his house, we went to a supermarket to buy gluten-free bread. With Kostas being an expert already in ordering gluten-free things in restaurants and fully aware of the importance of controlling cross-contamination, that night, they would not eat bread with gluten. Neither would his son… poor little boy! And I say “poor little boy” because when they gave him a piece of gluten-free bread he started crying… as you know, some gluten-free bread tends to get stuck between the teeth and in the gums… that happened to the kid.

Gluten-free catastrophes aside, we were very happy to have dinner at his house – I loved meeting his family! The next day I flew to Thessaloniki to continue my trip through Greece with Nikos.
