FOSTER’S HOLLYWOOD – american gluten free food

The first time I ate at Foster’s Hollywood was with Isabel, two years ago. We went to the one at Paseo de la Castellana, in Madrid (I think this is no longer open).

That day we shared the best fried potatoes with bacon and cheese that I have ever tasted, and then I had pork ribs with barbecue sauce (and more potatoes) and her some chicken wings. With barbecue sauce too. Today we can not do this because our stomach can not stand it… too much food!

As we usually sleep in Alcalá de Henares, the Foster’s Hollywood with gluten-free menu that is closest to us is the one of Torrejón de Ardoz. It is important that you keep in mind that they do not have a gluten-free menu in all the restaurants (at the end of the whole we indicate which ones). When you arrive at the restaurant, inform that you are celiac to the person who will take you to the table. They will give you a separate menu, with a large gluten-free symbol on the cover. Of course, we can not eat all the dishes of the regular menu, but the offer in the gluten free menu is perfect since, to our knowledge, they have adapted the best of each category of dishes.

In August of 2017, they changed the protocol for cooking gluten-free dishes. Before, when you were seated at the table, they used to remove the cutlery, plates and sauces and brought everything clean inside a sealed plastic bag. When I say “everything clean” we mean absolutely everything: cutlery, plates and glass. Also, they brought you a new pack of napkins from which you took a few. The gluten-free dishes came to the table under a lid.

This way of treating us, brought a lot of controversy: some celiacs thought that it was exaggerated and they felt offended to receive everything wrapped in plastic; others thought it was perfect and they felt calmer when it came to eating gluten-free in a restaurant where they also serve food containing gluten. Personally, I think that – although it might seem a bit extreme – in relation to security, it is never too much.

Now they do not do it that way anymore. They keep removing everything to bring it clean, but it is no longer wrapped in plastic. They bring it to you on a white plate (instead of brown like the dishes containing gluten): knife, fork and a napkin. They also bring you another dish with sauces in individual pouch. When they bring it to you, they inform you that the table napkins can not be used by the celiac person and that, if you need more, you should ask to the waiter who is in charge of serving the celiacs of the restaurant. This waiter comes from time to time to make sure that everything is fine.

Since the last 3-4 times we always order the same: fries and wings. In fact, I think it’s the exact amount, since we split everything and when we finish we do not feel super full.

The fries are called “Bacon & Cheese Fries”. They are so delicious! The best we have ever eaten! In fact, many times, while we talk during the week on video calls, we remember how good they are and we decide that it will be the first place we will go to eat when we meet again in Madrid. Usually we go for dinner to Más Que Bocados de Alcalá de Henares. One of our preferred restaurants!

And good things does not have to be complicated! It is about chips with ranchera sauce, bacon and a mixture of melted cheeses. Only with the bacon and the cheeses would already be delicious, but the sauce… OMG! What a sauce! It gives an acid touch that makes them even more delicious.

Then, we split fried chicken wings with barbecue sauce. They are called “Foster’s Chicken Pops”. Usually about 8 wings come – 4 each – with a barbecue sauce. Now the sauce jar is also white, instead of brown as before. It’s all under control!

As we never ordered dessert we can not put any photo, but we advance you can order: ice cream (chocolate or vanilla); fruit (apple or pineapple “in its juice”), a milkshake (you could not miss it in a restaurant with American food, you can order it with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry) or a brownie (they will bring it warm and with a vanilla ball next to it ). One day we’ll have to try it! Especially the Brownie!

Below we leave a picture of the “cheeseburger”, which you can see is very complete with bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, sliced tomato, mayonnaise and purple onion.

And the “National Star Ribs”,the plate of smoked pork ribs with barbecue sauce that I was talking about at the beginning. Keep in mind that the plate is brown because the photo is from two years ago. In this case, you can order a full rib or half rack. Also very good!

P.S.: Please keep in mind that in this blog I share my trips, anecdotes and experiences about gluten free travel around the world. It is possible that, in any of my trips, I go to some restaurant not trained by the associations where the risk of being contaminated with gluten exists. I kindly ask you to also take into account that the list of references can change. Please, always double check before eating in the restaurants we recommend. Thank you very much!
